Dashboard Warning Lights

Sometimes when you are driving, a warning light indicator will light up on your vehicle’s dashboard. Since these are merely symbols, it can be tough to initially decipher what they mean. While you can find their meanings in the owner’s manual, they often come on while driving and can require immediate attention. There are three kinds of dashboard indicator lights: green, yellow, and red. Green warning lights are often harmless and simply let you know that a system or feature in your vehicle is active. Yellow lights alert you to something that needs attention, but is not an immediate hazard. Red lights indicate a serious problem that requires urgent attention.

Green Warning Lights

Exterior Lights

This category can be further broken down into high beams, headlamps, and fog lamps. When one of these lights is on, it simply means the indicated lights are functioning as normal.

Cruise Control

When this indicator light is on, it means you have engaged your vehicle’s cruise control.

Yellow Warning Lights

Windshield Wiper Fluid

This indicates your wiper fluid reservoir needs to be refilled. While this doesn’t seem like something crucial, it can affect your visibility and safety.

Gas Pump

Most people are very familiar with this warning light. It alerts drivers that their gas tank is getting low. Fill up your vehicle to make it go away.

Tire Pressure

At least one of your vehicle’s tires is getting low. A common measurement is that the tire has fallen below ¼ of the standard recommended pressure.

Check Engine

The check engine light is very common and could be attributed to a number of different issues, from something relatively harmless to a pressing matter. It’s best to take your vehicle to a professional so they can perform a diagnostics test.

Red Warning Lights

Oil Pressure Low

Low oil pressure is dangerous and could affect the functioning of your vehicle’s engine or cause long-term damage. Top off the oil and check for leaks.

Battery System

A battery light indicates an issue either with the battery or the alternator. Check the battery, any charging connections, and the charging system overall.

Engine Temperature

When the engine gets too hot, it could seriously damage the mechanical parts. Pull your car over and turn off the ignition as soon as possible when you see this warning light.

Brake System

The braking system of your vehicle is crucial to the safety of all passengers, as well as other drivers on the road. If you see this warning light and the emergency brake does not engage, service your vehicle as soon as possible.
